NCYSA State Cup -
STATESVILLE-The ’93 Rocky Mount Area Youth Soccer Association Heat bested the North Meck Soccer Club Lady Black 4-0 and lost to the Seashore Soccer League Riptides 4-2 in the opening round of the NCYSA President’s State Cup last weekend.  In gaining the shutout of North Meck on Saturday, the Heat was led by Allie Donnenwirth who recorded two goals and two assists.  Donnenwirth scored the Heat’s first goal midway the first half after Brooke Hendricks pushed the ball deep into the North Meck defense and dropped the ball back to an onrushing Donnenwirth. The Heat generated 17 shots and dominated the remainder of the first half, but could not manage another score until the second half. The Heat scored its second goal 9 minutes into the second period, when Kasey Cooke easily beat the North Meck keeper after she was played in behind the defense on a sharp one-touch passing combination from Donnenwirth and Claire Fleming. Eight minutes later, Mary Beth Harrington scored the Heats third goal on an assist from Donnenwirth, her second of the game. Just 2 minutes later, Donnenwirth capped off the scoring for the Heat when she scored her second goal on an assist from Hannah Brock.  Heat midfielder Marissa Ramey served numerous well placed crosses in front of the North Meck goal, while forward Brittany Kropp made dangerous runs at the defense.  Heat defenders Ashley Batchelor, Sara King, Samantha Henke, Megan Lindsey and Theresa Hall limited North Meck to 3 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Holly Fryar was credited with the shutout.

On Sunday, after an early morning fog delay, the Heat fell behind 3-0 in the first half as the Riptide used excellent ball movement and pace to control the tempo. The Heat was awakened with 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Cooke chested a Harrington free kick down to her feet in front of the Riptide goal, spun and rocketed her shot into the net. Fleming brought the Heat to within one of the Riptide with 22 minutes remaining in the match when her shot from the left corner of the penalty area went over the head of the keeper and found the right side netting.  In the closing minutes, versatile Heat defender Stephanie Lossau was pushed up into the offensive attack in an effort to even the match. Her courageous efforts created numerous opportunities for the Heat, but failed to produce a score. The Riptide scored the games final goal on a quick counterattack in the waning moments when, in a last ditch effort to tie the score, the Heat defenders and goalie joined in the attack away from their goal. The 4-2 loss to the Riptide is the first experienced by the Heat in its 13 matches this Fall. The Heat will look to recover next weekend when play continues in the President’s State Cup at the Burt Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

WILSON-The ’93 Rocky Mount Area Youth Soccer Association Heat concluded its Fall season with a 4-3 come from behind victory over the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Spartan United White on Saturday in the NCYSA President’s State Cup.  Using crisp ball movement and clinical finishing, CASL moved out to a 2-0 lead after only 15 minutes. The Heat began its comeback midway the half when Claire Fleming intercepted a CASL goal kick and rifled a shot past the keeper to put the Heat on the scoreboard and back in the game. CASL answered 10 minutes later with yet another goal for a 3-1 lead.  The Heat continued to battle when, with less that 2 minutes left in the first half, Hannah Brock made a run at the CASL goal and was taken down by a defender while dribbling inside the 18 yard box.  Kasey Cooke converted the penalty kick to pull the Heat within one at halftime. The determined play of forward Brittany Kropp added a spark up top for the Heat.

The Heat made a key tactical adjustment to begin the second half when it moved defender Stephanie Lossau forward into the attack.  Together with midfielders Mary Beth Harrington, Allie Donnenwirth, Brooke Hendricks and Marissa Ramey, Lossau worked tirelessly to keep possession and play mostly in the Heat’s offensive half of the field.  Eleven minutes into the half the Heat made good use of its excellent field position when Cooke managed to slip past her defender, race down the right wing and drive a shot over the head of the CASL keeper. Cooke’s shot from 20 yards out finished in the side netting and knotted the score at 3-3. With 16 minutes remaining, Lossau alertly one-timed a Harrington corner kick into the CASL net to secure for the Heat its first lead at 4-3. CASL pressed hard to score an equalizer but was turned away repeatedly by the defensive efforts of Megan Lindsey, Theresa Hall, Ashley Batchelor, Samantha Henke and Sara King. Heat goalkeeper Holly Fryar aggressively came off her line to make several athletic saves and conclude her rookie season in goal with another outstanding performance. The Heat, coached by Brent Watkins, ends its season with a record of 12-1-1, having won a Virginia Beach Sun Cup Tournament Championship and earned promotion to the NCYSA Premier Division in the Fall of 2009.

October 18th & 19th - HEAT takes a win and a tie

The ’93 Rocky Mount Area Youth Soccer Association Heat Classic girls soccer team tied the Burlington Soccer Club Cardinal 3-3 and defeated the Fuquay-Varina Flames Red 1-0 over the weekend at the Old Carriage Road Soccer Complex.  The Heat (6-0-1) was unbeaten in the Fall season and finished in 1st Place in the NCYSA First Division East.  As a result, the team will be promoted to the NCYSA Premier Division for the Fall of 2009.

On Sunday, the Heat scored 3 goals in the second half to come back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to tie the Cardinal and secure its first place finish. Burlington used a strong favorable wind to dominate possession and score three unanswered goals in the first half. However, with the change of ends for the second half and with the wind now at its back, the Heat was set to make good use of the elements. The Heat, who managed only one shot on goal in the opening period, started its improbable comeback 6 minutes into the second half when Kasey Cook converted a penalty kick. The penalty was given when a Cardinal defender was called for handling a ball thrown by the Heat inside the 6 yard box. Six minutes later the Heat scored again when Mary Beth Harrington’s 35 yard shot rode the wind over the Cardinal keeper and into the top of the net. Now, with momentum also shifted in its favor, the Heat mounted a relentless attack on the Cardinal defense. With 5 minutes remaining in the match, the Heat completed its comeback when Heat midfielder Allie Donnenwirth forced a ball into the Cardinal net at the back post. Donnenwirth scored after a determined Claire Fleming fired a cross from the deep left corner to the front of the Burlington goal. Fleming’s cross went between several Cardinal defenders before reaching Donnenwirth, who jammed the ball into the net to secure the 3-3 tie.  Forward Brittany Kropp and midfielders Brooke Hendricks and Marissa Ramey provided a spark throughout the match.

On Saturday against Fuquay, Harrington scored the game winner midway the opening half when she curled in a free kick from 35 yards out. With her teammates positioned along the Flames 18 yard line, Harrington drove the ball to the far post where the Flames keeper, distracted by the onrushing Heat players, allowed the ball to skip into her goal. Heat defenders Stephanie Lossau, Ashley Batchelor, Samantha Henke, Theresa Hall and Megan Lindsey limited the Flames offense to five shots on goal helping goalkeeper Holly Fryar earn her third shutout.  With less than two minutes remaining in the match, Fryar preserved the win for the Heat by deflecting over the crossbar a point-blank shot fired by a Flames forward from within the 18 yard box.  Outside midfielders Sydney Browder and Hannah Brock created multiple dangerous scoring opportunities for the Heat with their runs on the wings.

The Heat, coached by Brent Watkins, will next compete in the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association President’s State Cup which will be held in Statesville, Wilson and Greensboro over the next three weekends

October 12 - HEAT shutsout PTFC

The ’93 Rocky Mount Area Youth Soccer Association Heat girls Classic soccer team scored two goals in the first half and shutdown the determined attack of the Piedmont Triad Football Club to secure a 2-0 win on Sunday at the Old Carriage Road Soccer Complex.  The Heat scored its first goal seven minutes into the match when, on a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box, Kasey Cooke lifted her shot over the wall and under the crossbar for a 1-0 Heat lead.  With 14 minutes remaining in the half, the Heat scored again when the PTFC keeper left her goal line and rushed Claire Fleming as she dribbled inside the penalty area. Fleming took advantage of the aggressive play by gingerly maneuvering the ball around the onrushing keeper and tapping the ball into an open net.  Midfielders Hannah Brock, Mary Beth Harrington, and Allie Donnenwirth displayed excellent ball control and composure on the ball to offset the physical style of PTFC and win the battle in the midfield.  Starting defensive backs Ashley Batchelor, Samantha Henke, Stephanie Lossau and Theresa Hall limited PTFC to five shots in the opening half.

In the second half, Brooke Hendricks, Sydney Browder, Marissa Ramey and Brittany Kropp continued to generate scoring opportunities for the Heat.  Megan Lindsey and Sara King supplied defensive stops while Heat goaltender Holly Fryar made 11 saves to record her second shutout of the season. With this win, the Heat (5-0-0) solidified its hold on first place in the NCYSA First Division East and will complete the Fall regular season next weekend with matches at home against the Fuquay-Varina Flames Red and the Burlington Soccer Club Cardinal.

October 5th - RMAYSA HEAT takes the win 4-3 over CASL Spartan United Black.

The ’93 Rocky Mount Area Youth Soccer Association Heat remained undefeated after securing a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Spartan United Black on Sunday at the WRAL Soccer Center in Raleigh.  The Heat conceded an early goal, but soon evened the match, when Sydney Browder pushed the ball to the right corner and fired a cross to Kasey Cooke, who deftly flicked her shot past the CASL keeper into the net.  Late in the first period, Claire Fleming scored for the Heat when Cooke deflected the ball off of a CASL midfielder and the rebound was alertly gathered by Fleming and fired into the net. The Heat led 2-1 at halftime.  Megan Lindsey and Theresa Hall provided key defensive play late in the half to slow the CASL attack, while Brittany Kropp provided a spark on offense.
Six minutes into the second half, Stephanie Lossau powered a long ball down the left side to Fleming who worked her way behind the CASL backline and beat the charging keeper to the far post for a goal.  Midway the half, Cooke added a much needed insurance goal when she headed a corner kick from Mary Beth Harrington into the net for a 4-1 Heat lead.  To their credit, CASL continued to apply pressure and scored 2 goals late in the contest. Heat goalkeeper Holly Fryar and defenders Ashley Batchelor, Samantha Henke, Lossau and Browder responded to the challenge and withstood CASL’s frenzied comeback attempt.  Fryar made 15 saves in the match.  Midfielders Ally Donnenwirth, Marissa Ramey, Hannah Brock, and Brooke Hendricks disrupted the CASL midfield play throughout the match.
The Heat (4-0-0) continue play in the NCYSA First Division East next Sunday when they host the Piedmont Triad Football Club Lady Black at the Old Carriage Road Soccer Complex.

September 27th, 2008 - Heat outshoots the NB Coastal United 7-3

The ’93 Rocky Mount Area Youth Soccer Association Heat girls Classic soccer team used an explosive offensive attack to outshoot the New Bern Coastal United 7-3 at the Old Carriage Road Soccer Complex on Saturday.  New Bern began the scoring, but the Heat quickly responded when, seven minutes into the match, forward Kasey Cooke one touched a cross from Claire Fleming past the New Bern keeper to even the match at 1-1.  New Bern scored again midway the half, and again the Heat countered when Mary Beth Harrington scored an unassisted goal by slicing her corner kick through the New Bern defense, past the keeper, and directly into the net for a 2-2 halftime deadlock.

Early in the second half, Cooke scored the go ahead goal for the Heat after Harrington accurately headed a New Bern goal kick down directly in front of the New Bern goal.  Fifteen minutes into the half, Ally Donnenwirth scored the first of her two second half goals, when she forced the ball into the New Bern net following a corner kick from Cooke.  Four minutes later, Brittany Kropp was taken down in the 18 yard box by the New Bern goalkeeper and Ashley Batchelor converted the penalty kick for a 5-2 Heat lead.  After New Bern scored its third goal, Fleming ran onto a Stephanie Lossau pass, and fired a shot over the charging New Bern keeper for a goal.  Donnenwirth finished the scoring for the Heat when, with five minutes remaining, she battled through the New Bern defense for an unassisted goal.

Heat goalkeeper Holly Fryar collected 12 saves in the win.  The Heat benefited from solid perfomances from midfielders Hannah Brock, Marissa Ramey, Brooke Hendricks and defenders Megan Lindsey, Samantha Henke, Theresa Hall, and Sara King.  The Heat, coached by Brent Watkins, improves to 3-0-0 and continues regular season play in the NCYSA First Division East next weekend in Raleigh against the CASL Spartan United Black.
